The National Weather Service has declared an excessive heat warning for
Ridley Park that will be in effect today until 7:00PM tonight.
Today Ridley Park will experience a prolonged period of dangerously hot
temperatures and high humidity, creating a dangerous situation in which
heat related illnesses are likely to occur.
The first hot spell of the season will peak this afternoon as a dominant
Bermuda High pumps scorching hot air into the Downtown Business
District. This afternoon's high temperature is expected to climb to 94ºF
with a heat index value of 105-110ºF - now this is dangerous weather!
The usual reminders apply: drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned
room, stay out of the sun, and check on elderly relatives and neighbors.
When our body fails to properly regulate our internal temperature on an
excessive heat and humidity day, Heat Stroke can develop quickly. The
signs and symptoms of Heat Stroke are: throbbing headache, dizziness,
light-headedness, lack of sweating, red, hot, and dry skin, rapid heartbeat,
rapid breathing, and behavioral changes like confusion, disorientation, or
staggering. If you come upon someone in this condition dial 911 immediately.
While waiting for the paramedics, move the victim to an air-conditioned
room or a shady area location and attempt to lower their body temperature
by fanning air over the victim, wetting their skin with water or a garden hose
or apply ice packs to their armpits, groin, neck, and back where blood vessels
are closest to the surface of the skin
Make sure your pets are also protected with plenty of water and a place to
keep as cool as possible.
Stay safe, cool and hydrated. Telephone your family, friends and neighbors
and dial 911 for any heat related illness or difficulties.
