The one thing I find remarkable about snow is the beauty and contrast of it against the bright blue, almost blinding sky afterwards. The snow itself casts a monochromatic veil over a landscape, deadening every sound, including the wind. It covers all scars upon the land and adds elegance to even the most rusted, distorted structures. It's really quite remarkable how nature, seemingly bothered by our indifference to her daily efforts, decides she wants us to see the landscape once again as she… Continue

RIDLEY PARK (CBS 3) ―

Peg Trill does not need to see the faces of the children her non-profit donates bikes to each Christmas.
“I can almost feel their excitement,” said the Ridley Park resident and founder and president of Santa’s Wheels. “Every year, I think of all these little ones screaming, ‘I’ve got a bike! I’ve got a bike!’ “It’s the greatest feeling in the world.”
This is the third year Santa’s Wheels has given bikes to children in need. “The first year, it was three bikes that I… Continue

RE the DEc. 18 council meeting. My letter published Dec. 25, link below---
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Setting the record straight
To the Times: In the Dec. 18 article on Ridley Park's televised borough council meeting, the Daily Times reporter misquoted my remarks to Rep. Miccarelli. I actually said the Pa. legislature was meeting at that time in an emergency session to deal with the state budget. And that Mr. Micccarelli was elected to represent us in state… Continue

"The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another; and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he vowed to make it." - J.M. Barrie
, from his novel The Little Minister (1891)
When I think of growing up, the characters and imaginary places in the works of James M. Barrie are never far from my thoughts. I've stood in front of his house… Continue

For any cross-country skiers out there, wanted to let you know that my husband forged some cross-country trails at the park. Come take advantage before the rain comes! He says it was lovely at sunrise yesterday.

In the continuing effort to go green, Ridley Park Borough begins recycling used Christmas trees from the curbside throughout the 2 week period after Christmas. This is another win-win proposition from new Council President Bob Bergen (Mr Recycle). The weight of the collected trees becomes part of our annual recycling report and their weight is removed for our regular trash stream. What's great about this is the borough makes money from recycling and pays out money for trash removal - this turns… Continue

In the Dec. 18 article on Ridley Park’s televised December borough council meeting, the Daily Times reporter left out a section of my remarks to Rep. Miccarelli. I sent a letter to the editor asking for a correction. I hope that the paper will publish my letter in the next few days.

In a surprise move Tuesday night, Democratic Councilman Joe Yorke was ousted as president of borough council after Republican Councilman Nick Miccarelli called for council’s reorganization.
Republican Bob Berger is the new president and Miccarelli is vice president.
Mayor Hank Eberle, also a Republican, broke the 3-3 tie vote in favor of the GOP for the offices of president, vice president and the appointment of a new council member to fill a vacancy created by the… Continue

Ridley Park faces a 450% increase in stray-animal fees come January 1, 2010. Every Delaware County municipality is shocked by the SPCA's increase from $25 to $116 and more than half of Delaware County’s 49 municipalities packed into a meeting at the SPCA to discuss the recent increase in stray-animal costs.

This excellent new law proposed by Bryan Lentz I would hope would also apply to state representatives holding onto borough council seats as absentees long after their election to state office as happened in Ridley Park in 2009.
Delco Times Editorial Dec. 9:
Editorial: Pols should not hold two elected offices
In a move clearly designed to embarrass one of his fellow lawmakers from Delaware County, state Rep. Bryan Lentz, D-161 of Swarthmore, is proposing a new law that… Continue

Kiva is an online organization that facilitates micro loans. They do all the research, and find people in countries across the world who need a bit of money to expand a business, buy supplies, build an extra room on a store - so that you can match your money with these people. You are not giving them money, you are loaning them money from your account, which is repaid into your account to be loaned again.
Here's why I like it and why I participate: you can SEE a picture of the person… Continue

It's been quite a while since I've needed to park near the RP train station to go into Philadelphia, and I was quite surprised today to find that nearly all the meters around it are limited to 6 hours - NOT long enough for a day of work in the city. The ones on the opposite side of the tracks to the station allow 12 hours.
What's up with that? It makes little sense to me that the town would limit people (and revenue?) in this way. Weird and frustrating.

I do love the hometown feeling, all the people who turn out in spite of the cold, and the children (and dogs!) all bundled up to see Santa. I have a special place in my heart for the great Ridley Raiders band, which good-naturedly played The Same Song over and over, and looked quite festive in their Santa hats. Thanks to everyone who helps make this happen, and makes it look easy. I am SURE it isn't.

It was nothing fancy - only a small family, some friends, clergy, and a few politco's standing in the rain, gathered together under umbrellas around a tree. The young tree was a hickory about 15 feet tall in Recreation Park (ABC Field) protected behind a wood fence make of white pickets and adorned with a bow someone made of Christmas ribbon. The group around the tree were mixed by age and gender. Their common thread was the loss of someone special, which made the bond from person to person… Continue

My first chance to see the Raiders last night.... Versus North Penn. Congratulations to the team, parents and fans.
Beating North Penn was no small challenge and the team did everything they had to...and a 96 yard kickoff return to boot!!!
Hope to see everyone out there next week...wherever the game is. Spread the word.
Although I don't live in the Ridley area, most of my friends and clients do. It was good to see some Penncrest guys and some Garnet Valley guys… Continue

It's been since Tuesday night when Ridley Park Borough Council person Doris Lamb tendered her resignation at the monthly borough workshop and I haven't read a word about it anywhere. The first vacancy by Linda Smith's exit just weeks ago was filled by Kenneth Harper. Now a second appointment for Doris Lamb's seat is expected before December 14.
I didn't attend the recent workshop meeting or read a copy of her resignation letter, instead I called Doris on the phone to find out why a… Continue
